Currently, we are looking for a Project Management Engineer to join the ArcBest Technologies team. The Project Management Engineer plans, executes, and finalizes projects according to strict deadlines and within budget, to include acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants in order to deliver projects according to plan. This position guides their team through the entire software development life cycle and must maintain excellent communication with management, team members, and other stakeholders on the state of the project. The Project Management Engineer not only provides the business with exceptional service, but also develops an exceptional work team, while ensuring the business’ requirements and internal requirements are satisfied throughout the entire project life cycle.

Your contribution may include:

  • Define project scope, goals and deliverables that support business goals in collaboration with senior management and stakeholders and define project success criteria and disseminate to involved parties throughout project life cycle.
  • Communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely, efficient, and clear fashion.
  • Liaise with project stakeholders and team members on an ongoing basis to set and continually manage project expectations.
  • Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones using appropriate tools.
  • Track project milestones and deliverables.
  • Determine the frequency and content of status reports from the project team, analyze results, and troubleshoot problem areas.
  • Conduct project postmortems and create a recommendations report in order to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements.
  • Provide input in developing best practices and tools for project execution and management.
  • Assist in the training of project management personnel outside of the PMO.
  • Estimate the resources and participants needed to achieve project goals.
  • Work with other department managers for the acquisition of required personnel from within the company, as needed.
  • Determine and assess need for additional staff and/or consultants and make the appropriate recruitments if necessary, during project cycle.
  • Direct and manage project development from beginning to end, and delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel.
  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the project team and identify and manage project dependencies and critical paths.
  • Develop full-scale project plans and associated communications documents, and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations.
  • Manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans.
  • Coach, mentor, motivate, and supervise project team members and contractors, and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work.
  • Build, develop, and grow any business relationships vital to the success of the project.
  • Know the techniques used in designing, coding, and testing of a program, assuming they are consistent with current AB Tech programming standards in place at that time.
  • Consult with the Associate Director, Project Sourcing and Fulfillment, to find solutions to emergency problems that may occur.
  • Schedule and assign tasks and jobs within multiple-person projects, and schedule informal or formal meetings with users concerning projects and tasks and setting up times for demonstration of program changes or new systems completed.
  • Determine what type of problem resolution is required and whether a problem should be deferred to another area (if so, who to), and determine how and when a request or problem should be reported to management (within the guidelines set by the Sourcing and Fulfillment department).
  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

As a Project Management Engineer, you will be a member of the ArcBest Technologies Project Management Office (PMO) team in Fort Smith, AR. Generally, hours will be Monday – Friday, between 6:00 am – 6:00 pm with occasional irregular hours depending on workload.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in business or engineering or other relevant field, required, with Master’s degree, preferred. Experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.

Experience: Minimum, three years’ experience in software development, project management, process improvement, human resources, pricing, procurement, product ownership, or management.

Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Understanding of object-oriented programming, preferred. Working knowledge or experience in any of the following: HTML, Visual Basic, CICS, Web and PC, COM objects, SQL Databases, Active Server Pages, and .NET. 

Other Requirements: Pursuit and completion of PMP (Project Management Professional) certification within five years.
